Farmer's Almanac: B-Sens Keep Rolling; Daugavins Back to Junior

Hello Internet,

Here's hoping your holiday was free of alcohol fueled family disputes that linger on without really reaching any form of meaningful conclusion, and that the avarice of you and your loved ones was at least temporarily sated. Today we set out to exchange that which was not to our exact specifications and seek out the bargain by which we may relieve ourselves of the 30 dollar gift certificate we got from our aunt. On this fine Boxing Day, as a belated Christmas offering I present to you the greatest gift of all: My written work! Here's the week that was in the cosmopolitan metropolis that is Binghamton, New York.

Fri Dec 19th 2008 – Binghamton 3, Syracuse 2 (SO)
Binghamton squeaked out a narrow victory in the shootout Friday, achieving perfection on the penalty kill for the fourth straight game. Goaltender Brian Elliott was once again strong in goal, stopping 30 shots. Elliot also stopped 4 of 5 shootout attempts, bringing his professional shootout record to 8-2. The B-Sens got goals from tough guy Danny Bois and Latvian national Kaspars Daugavins. Jeremy Yablonski fought Crunch enforcer Jon Mirasty at the end of the second period in a marathon so I included it below. Josh Hennessey and Denis Hamel scored in the shootout, giving the B-Sens a 2-1 advantage over the Crunch in the tiebreaker. The Senators face the Crunch twice more between now and the New Year.

Sat Dec 20th 2008 – Binghamton 4, Bridgeport 1
The Baby Sens held a one goal lead after a defensive first 40 minutes. Binghamton put Bridgeport away in the third, scoring three goals to the Tigers’ one. Several B-Sens had multi-point games. Zach Smith(1G, 2A, +3) led the way, while Brian Lee (2A, +2) and Matt Cavosie (1G, 1A, +2) had a deuce on the score sheet. Former Sound Tiger and usually defensive minded Drew Fata notched two goals against his old teammates. Brian Elliott, remaining hot, stopped 21 of 22 shots to get the win. The B-Sens penalty kill went 6 for 6, giving them 29 straight successful kills.

The boys from Bingo will try to earn their 5th win in 6 games tonight when they face Syracuse at home. The team will have plenty of opportunity to work off that Christmas turkey, as they visit the Wilkes-Barrie/Scranton Penguins tomorrow night and then travel to Hershey for a matchup with the AHL leading Bears on Saturday.

Profile – Kaspars Daugavins.
Position: LW
Shoots: Left
Height: 5-11
Weight: 204 lbs
DOB: May 18th 1988
Hometown: Riga, Latvia
Acquired: 3rd round, 91st overall in 2006 by Ottawa

This is Daugavin’s third season in North America, since he came over to play Canadian Major Junior to try to fast track to Ottawa. Daugavins showed well during his first two OHL seasons with the St. Michael’s Majors. Daugavins notched 18 goals and 42 assists and 64 PIM while going -18 in 60 games as a rookie in 2006-07. He played for his native Latvia in the 2007 World Championship in Moscow, recording 3 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. The Latvian lamp lighter showed more of a goal scoring touch last season, ending up with 40 goals and 74 points while posting a +11 and 42 PIM. He once again competed for Latvia at the 2008 WHC in Halifax. In 6 games he registered no points and was either injured or benched, as he didn’t play at all in Latvia’s last 5 periods of the tournament.

Daugavins’ pro career has been puzzling as well. He played with Binghamton at the conclusion of both his seasons with the majors, compiling 2 goals and 1 assist in 14 games. While that slow start could likely be attributed to rookie jitters, Daugavins only managed another 2 goals and an assist in 23 games this season. He was sent back to the OHL’s Majors on Wednesday which, considering he is 20 and will be playing as an over-ager, is not an encouraging sign. It doesn’t look like Daugavins projects as an NHL talent at this point, and an AHL career might even be a stretch at this point.

Daugavins has shown flashes of skill over his career, but keeps it simple as demonstrated in the clip below. He has also been willing to drop the gloves at the junior level.

Read your article, if I just would say: very good, it is somewhat insufficient, but I am

still tempted to say: really good!
