The Daily Wrap Up - Thursday February 19, 2009

The trade deadline is fast approaching, and while it is not as good as christmas (draft day), it can be considered to be inline with a decent birthday.

Currently sitting 13 points out of a playoff spot, Murray had better sell off the UFA's regardless of what is currently happening, as this year's draft is loaded, and we could use some more depth to fill up the pipeline.

SportingNews.com - Ranked the 10th biggest disappointment of the season.
Just two years ago, the Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators squared off for the Stanley Cup. Now, both are in danger of missing the playoffs. Of the past six teams to play for the Stanley Cup, the only lock to make the playoffs this season is Detroit. That's crazy.

Ottawa is making a nice run now, but it's too late. Anaheim has enough firepower and veteran leadership to salvage the season. But it had better happen soon.
It's not really all that crazy, perhaps YOU forget about free agency and the amount of turnover it now causes throughout the league.  Oh yeah there is also something called a salary cap which doesn't help either.  Without those two issues we would still have Zdeno Chara, Martin Havlat and would probably be a solid playoff contender.  And NO, i am not at all bitter...

I was going to cite this article trying to make wind of a "goaltending controversy" brewing in Ottawa.  But it's pretty obvious how this is going to play out.  They will play the hot hand (and if in doubt, go to Brian Elliott), and then if the playoffs elude the team, Brian Elliott will get the rest of the starts.  All this is contingent on Brian Murray not making the obvious trades to acquire Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas.  But I don't even want to think of a world where Murray fails at landing those two.  I for one would be pretty embarrassed if I couldn't get those simple trades done.

The Senators recalled forward Josh Henessy from Binghamton yesterday.  He is the last remaining asset from the Martin Havlat trade, which basically amounted to Ottawa giving away Havlat for a few spare parts.  Although finding some success in the AHL, the NHL appears to be (like that girl you meet at a party, and you have a very nice conversation with her - she laughs at your jokes, batts her eyelashes - but after the party, never returns your call) ever elusive for him.  Maybe under Corey Clouston, he might have a shot at staying with the big club.

Trading Havlat away for Michael Barinka (never coming over) and Josh Hennessy (just not NHL calibre) was a mistake. But included in that trade was a second round pick that has become Patrick Wiercioch.

This guy was invited to the World Junior camp last year and has assumed the top defenceman role on his college team while scoring quite a few goals. He's big and tall and should be a phenomenal player if all progresses as it seems to be shaping up to be.

Don't write that trade off completely yet.
