[Wrap Up] Wednesday December 17, 2008

Hockey's Future.com - The rankings for the organizational prospects are out and the Ottawa Senators dropped one spot to 27.
Strengths: Ottawa has languished near the bottom of the organizational rankings lately, but they do have a pair of potential top-flight defensemen waiting in the wings in Brian Lee and Erik Karlsson, who both have great offensive ability and are neither of them slouches in their own end. With youthful BCHL grad Patrick Wiercioch added to the mix this past draft as well, the Sens have put together a quality group of blue-liners. In goal, Brian Elliott will get lengthy consideration as the Senators goaltender of the future. Weaknesses: Former top offensive prospect Josh Hennessy had a disappointing year last season and has struggled to regain his form this year, adding to the bleak offensive landscape in the system. While Ilya Zubov, Zach Smith, and Kaspars Daugavins have taken steps forward recently, there are still plenty of question marks, and none project to being a top-line forward. The Sens are also very thin on the right flank. Top 5 prospects: 1. Brian Lee, D, 2. Erik Karlsson, D, 3. Brian Elliott, G, 4. Kaspars Daugavins, LW, 5. Jim O'Brien, C. Key losses to graduation: Nick Foligno.
Senate's Note:  It looks like the Senators inability to draft 1st line players have come to light with this ranking.  The Senators have great depth on defense, but are really lack any elite prospects at the forward position.  The circumstances are far from being dire, but it would be nice to have some high skilled prospects being groomed to one day become a top three player in Ottawa (or at least a top 6).

Sportsnet.ca - Anton Volchenkov missed yesterday's game with a lower body injury, but should return to action on friday.

The defenceman was able to skate on Tuesday morning before the Senators practiced as a team. Head coach Craig Hartsburg said that Volchenkov might be able to play on Friday when the Senators travel to New Jersey.
Senate's Note: Great news for the Senators.  These types of injuries go with the territory.  It's good to see that it wasn't anything major like a broken bone.

Senators 1 Thrashers 4

Senate's Note: To begin with I will say that I don't believe Alex Auld would have fared much better.  Although Gerber's play cannot instill confidence in anyone, and his own confidence may well have vanished, he was not the reason for last night's loss.  Can anyone count the amount of times we go shots from the slot?  or tipped point shots? or got a shot off a rebound? The gritty plays and the hard-nosed goals are what it is going to take to get this team out of its slump.  The Senators just lost to the Atlanta Thrashers on home ice.  It is unimaginable how frustrating it must be for the Senators, but those two points given away tonight should never have left the rink.  If it wasn't for the antics of Chris Neil and Jarkko Ruutu, the game would be unmentionable and soon forgotten.

Yep, the talent pool is more like a wading pool, there is barely anything there. Hopefully the brutal season and major moves we will see will land us some good picks and prospects. Plus, you never know, we may have a chance at a lottery pick, although I doubt it. i foresee more of a toronto-style ninth or tenth place finish followed by the drafting of another propect who projects well but is 2-3 years away. If we don't make some major chanhges this year, you never know, maybe we'll be in the running for Hall.
