Chiarelli came to the Bruins following seven seasons with the Ottawa Senators, five as their Director of Legal Relations and two as Assistant General Manager. He was involved in all aspects of that team's hockey operations, including contract research and negotiations, salary arbitration and all player personnel matters. He was also involved in overseeing Ottawa's top developmental affiliate, the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League. The Senators had four 100+ point seasons during his tenure, never finished below 94 points and they finished with the League's top record in 2002-03 and the best record in the Eastern Conference in 2005-06 with 113 points in each of those seasons.
Here's a quick list of some of the improvements he has made to Boston (correct me if I am wrong):
Zdeno Chara
Marc Savard
Manny Fernandez
Milan Lucic
Phil Kessel
Dennis Wideman
Pretty impressive list of players, especially the drafting of Milan Lucic.
While this is not an article to criticize Brian Murray, I do feel that maybe the biggest mistake in Ottawa was letting Chiarelli get away!
