Elliot to Start for Sens vs. Rangers, Gerber a Healthy Scratch

The red-hot Brian Elliott will start in goal tonight for your Ottawa Senators. The Senators recalled Elliott from Binghamton Friday morning. Our regular readers will be familliar with his exploits, but in case you aren't you can learn more here and here. With the playoffs slipping further and further out of reach, this move seems to be a desperate attempt to turn things around. Elliott has been among the AHL's leaders in goaltending statistics, registering 18 wins (1st) a .926 sv% (4th) and a 2.31 GAA (6th) in 30 appearances.

Elliott spoke with Michael Sharp of the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin, and had this to say:

"Obviously, you can get pretty excited, just knowing that there's a great opportunity in front of you, and also a little nervousness as well, but that's always good. But, just mainly excited to get up there and see if I can help contribute to their team."

"Yeah, I think so. Definitely know how the NHL works, and how some of those guys prepare before the game. And just being up there any time, whether playing or not, you just soak in as much as you can. And if you're up there for an extended period of time, you obviously soak in some good stuff, and that's stuff that you can put into your own game and preparation. So, hopefully, I can use some of that experience in the upcoming games here."

"You try to make it like that. I don't know, I haven't been in this situation very much, so I'm kind of learning as I go. But talking to mentors and people I respect, that's all they say, is just go out there and play your game, and everything will take care of itself."

With Alex Auld backing up Elliott, Martin Gerber is the out man out and will be a healthy scratch. It's about time as far as I'm concerned. His poor performance in Boston was likely the final straw for Bryan Murray. There are rumours suggesting that Gerber could be waived floating around.
